I experienced my first panic attack and my first episode of clinical depression in 2001 at age 27. After trying multiple anti-depressants, I found one that worked for me, and I was able to pull out of the depression and remained relatively stable for several years. Unfortunately, in 2008 the anti-depressant ceased to be effective, and the depression and anxiety returned. I spent the next 18 months trying a variety of anti-depressants, anti-psychotics, etc. Each medication had its unique side effects, and one particular strong medication ended with a night in the hospital after I experienced stroke-like symptoms in the middle of the night.
At this point, I decided to sell my small business to reduce stress and to ease the toll my anxiety and depression was having on my wife and children. In fall of 2010 after careful consideration, I decided to go to for ECT treatments. I didn’t like the predicted side effects, but I was desperate for relief for myself and my family. During a preliminary visit to a neurologist to get clearance for ECT treatments, the neurologist asked me if I had considered trying the new TMS treatment in lieu of ECT. I researched the therapy and decided it was worth a try prior to ECT treatments based on the reduced side effects and the easier coordination of therapy. Dr. Scott West and his staff were very helpful, informative and supportive throughout my entire 25 session TMS treatment. I was initially disappointed that I didn’t feel much benefit after a couple of weeks, but I stuck with it and felt markedly better upon finishing the treatment. But the best part was yet to come.
Even after the treatments ended, I continued to improve. My energy level rose, anxiety was held in check, and I was able to re-establish myself, my family relationships, and career. Almost two years after my last TMS treatment, I have not had any significant anxiety or depression, and I am very hopeful for the future. Thank you, Dr. West and staff for giving me my life back.
